Although dogs are able to produce the amino sulfonic acid taurine from sulfur-containing amino acids, clinical studies have shown a correlation between the occurrence of a pathological enlargement of the heart muscle, the so-called DCM, and low taurine levels in the blood. This has been observed especially in Newfoundlanders, American Cocker Spaniels and in Golden Retrievers, as well as in soy-based feeding. Feeding taurine to the animals improved their heart activity.
In addition, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued an update in July 2018 that potentially cereal-free dog food with main ingredients from pulses (beans, peas, lentils), potatoes or sweet potatoes could be related to the development of heart disease DCM due to a taurine deficiency.
